For a day of fun and scenery, take Forest Service Road 154 South out of Bicknell, Utah. This improved gravel road is recommended for high clearance vehicles and is impassable during winter months and early spring because of snow. This is a must-see drive when fall turns the shimmering green of the aspen to hues of vibrant reds and golden yellows. FSR 154 is a great route for viewing wildlife. Prairie dogs are eminent residents in the lower-elevation area. Watch for deer, elk and antelope; wild turkeys strut their stuff along this route. Another familiar critter to be seen is the rancher's grazing cattle summering on the lush green slopes of the west end of Boulder Mountain, Utah.

Boulder Mountain is rich in scenery as well as in fishing; lakes, streams and reservoirs are abundant. The Aquarius Plateau alone has over 60 lakes and streams, such as Roundy Reservoir, Cyclone Lake and Posey Lake, all of which are stocked with fish.

Posey Lake is especially picturesque, nestled amongst green pines and fed by clear mountain streams, which make this a great fishing and picnic spot in a peaceful mountain setting. Non-motorized boats can be used on the lake and there is a boat ramp. If hiking through beautiful green meadows and viewing a bit of history is a pleasure, take the short hike to the fire lookout built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the depression era. The lookout is no longer in use nor is the historic Jubilee Guard Station, another short hike. It was built in 1905 and housed rangers and their families in the summer months.

Continue your day of scenery on Forest Service Road 154 and travel over Hell's Backbone road. This route will take you high along a narrow ridge where canyons and desert plateaus lie at your feet in a multicolored wonder, across the modern Hell's backbone bridge (replacing the original built by the CCC) which spans a deep and narrow canyon and runs into scenic Highway 12 south of the town of Boulder.

Located in the town of Boulder, Utah on Scenic Byway 12, the Anasazi State Museum and partially excavated prehistoric Native American village is a great stop along your journey. The town of Boulder sits amidst green fields and hills of white quilted rock. These ruins were once the site of one of the largest Anasazi communities west of the Colorado River and served as a hub of Anasazi culture. Experts believe that Anasazi occupied the village between 1050 and 1200 A.D. We recommend that you also visit the museum (where artifacts from this ancient culture are displayed year-round).

Utah's Scenic Byway 12 breaks off of Route 24 just east of Aquarius Inn and is one of only 20 American highways to be dubbed an "All-American Highway," the highest and most prestigious award given to a road. Highway 12 is ranked the second most scenic route in the nation.

The road runs north-south, dipping and climbing its way around the east end of Boulder Mountain through shimmering green groves of quaking aspen and the evergreen of pines. This is an especially beautiful drive in the fall when the brilliant green of the aspen turn to gilded gold and fiery red. Scenic lookouts are marked and paved. From these vantage points you can see (on a clear day) hundreds of miles over Capitol Reef National Park and other scenic areas. In fact you'll be able to see the red and white cliffs of Capitol Reef, the pigeon blue of the clay mesas of Caineville and the lofty, blue peaks of the Henry Mountains, where one of the last free-roaming herd of buffalo graze.

After traveling through Grover, take the picturesque county road to Teasdale. It's an enjoyable ride past Fish Creek, the Cock's Comb and green fields and connects back to Highway 24.
